The Return Of The Son Of The Chicago Band!

Phil's original Chicago-based electric line-up joins him for the first full band show since July 15th, 2010, when Phil and the band performed a final Chicago show before he left for tour and didn't come back for six years. Now, fully ensconced in Chicago music again, Phil was asked if he'd like a show at this little neighborhood joint by a friend who said "and if you'd like to bring the band." The rest is obvious. A resounding "yes" through various messages between the mates, and here we are.

Music will run late.

21 and over.

The music will span Phil's original material (these are the guys he recorded "Minutes To Circle" with) and a list of covers they all enjoy, including some fronted by Megan Corse.

Anybody can attend, bring food, beverages of all kinds...a folding chair is recommended if you don't want to just find a large rock or spot of grass. 1700 S Hastings Way
Eau Claire, WI 54701
USA
715-832-6431
Price: No Cover!!

Here's a link to a map to get you to The Red Parrot.

You'll need it! This has become one of the biggest places in town for entertainers of all kinds to come hone their craft for fifteen minutes every week! You'll perform on a well prepared stage in a popular local venue (drums, bass/keyboard amp, small guitar amp and light percussion are all there). Along with the chance for newbies to get ready for regular shows, seasoned veterans to try out new material or promote an upcoming gig, it's also a place where bands are founded, gig opportunities shared, and new friends made. We have a Facebook page that shares pics and videos from each week, too. I and many others have picked up work through here, started new collaborations and found people in the service end of the arts like photographers, videographers, sound engineers and studio owners. Many of the top people in the local entertainment scene make this a weekly stop. And of course, the drinks are cheap, the bartender Kiah is awesome and fun, you'll enjoy meeting the bar regulars, and will no doubt make plenty of new friends and fans. If you come by to perform, feel free to bring merchandise to sell (we have a CD seller) and material to promote your work or your show dates. We're all in this together and by rubbing elbows with each other and sharing our art with each other, we continue to expand our own creative ideas and build a better, more vibrant and cutting edge entertainment scene for The Chippewa Valley.

The evening is hosted by yours truly Phil Circle and my good friend, a talented songwriter and performer Nancy Olson. We often receive help setting up and breaking down from our friend D.C. Walsh, my lovely wife Megan (who you may catch trying out some solo stuff) and Carlin Kaufman, who also hosts and DJs for the Thursday Ladies' Night at The Red Parrot.

Contact Nancy or myself for more info, questions, or to get signed up before you arrive.

Red Parrot
Open Mic Night with Phil Circle and Nancy Olson - 7pm-close (potentially)
1700 S Hastings Way
Eau Claire, WI 54701
USA
715-832-6431
Price: No Cover!!

We just keep on going and going and going every week.

Nancy and I usually show up at about 6pm to set up the stage and P.A. which includes a bass amp, guitar amp (not a great one), drums, percussion, and the usual stands and mics and such.

Typically, we've already been contacted by a couple acts who want their 15 minutes to get them in a spot on the list. By the time sign up starts at 7pm, more folks have arrived. Originally, this open stage was intended to run until 11:30, but as more people started showing up and the spectator crowd grew, we just kept it going as long as everyone was drinking and having a good time. Now, in addition to the list growing longer all night as late comers roll in, we've begun letting anyone who got up early sign back up at the end of the list, with the understanding that they will be pushed back if a newbie shows up.

Now the night routinely runs until last call at 1:30am.

It's also become a tradition leading up to last call, for us to do a Round Robin of joke telling.

So, obviously, we have a great time. Lots of networking happens, plenty of music lovers come to hear the variety of musical acts we have, including some local legends. It's become a real community.

Map, here.

We had a great success at our first show at this re-vamped venue back in June!

If you've been there, you know it has character.

If you haven't been to this recently redone room, but knew the old one or not, check it out. Our last show, the past owner dropped in for the gig... for which we were of course happy. He took great care of bands and patrons when he owned the room and has passed on that legacy to the new owners.

New look, new menu, same location, lotsa the same folks and many new ones.

Memorial Concert for Matt "Matteo" Steinmetz - 9pm-close
1218 W. Morse Ave
Chicago, IL 60626
773-764-8900
Price: $10 to Benefit Cancer Research

In December of 2011, I received a phone call from my friend and brother in music of 20 years, groomsman at my wedding to Megan, and the man that taught me much of what I know about the blues, the biz and live performance. I had last seen him on a trip back to Chicago for my Mom's memorial in October when we and our wives sat together on his front stoop and talked. He was finishing his last round of chemo for his second fight with cancer and was confident it was working. Then one day in December, I received this message on my phone:

"Hey Felipe, it's Matteo. I dunno, get in touch with me if you can. Make a long story short, I'm in hospice as you know. Time's running really short. Really short, man. So short, I don't think you'll be able to make it down here in time. I love you my brother, I don't know how to say goodbye, but I guess I have to. Um, I just dunno what the fuck to say, but try and get in touch with me if you can and we'll rap a bit. I love you Felipe."

I went outside the school where I teach private lessons here in Eau Claire, lit a smoke, and called him back. We did get to talk for a good amount of time. I promised him we'd look after his wife and honor his music. He said, "You know I'm glad my brother that you don't sound sad, you're being upbeat. You have to know I'm at peace with my God and I'll look in on you on occasion. You'll hear a little harp (harmonica) in the wind, it'll be me. You give Megan my love, will ya? She's a doll. You finally got it right."

When we were done talking and said the final goodbye, I hung up, leaned against the wall of the school and wept. As the song I wrote "Just The Blues Ma'am" says, I speak to him nightly and he speaks to me back. I have little conversations with him about life as if he's right next to me. For all I know he is. This man's legacy lives on through the myriad friends and family and fans, the other musicians he influenced, the remarkable work he did, and his general approach to life... live it, then be at peace.

This show will include a long line-up of Chicago musicians, myself included, who will memorialize this amazing man and his work, as well as raise money for his widow to give to cancer research.

Along with the cover charge, there will be tip jars for contributions, and raffles all evening with the final item being a guitar donated by a great admirer of our late friend and brother.

Additionally, anyone who can't make it to the event is welcome to hit the donate button here on my site and I will get it to Barb, his widow. He was a truly great man, taken too early. I even remember when he met his wife, and ooohhh, the blood curdling stories I could tell from our years together!

Red Parrot
Chippewa Valley Free Clinic Fundraiser - 9pm-1am
1700 S Hastings Way
Eau Claire, WI 54701
USA
715-832-6431
Price: $2

The Chippewa Valley Free Clinic needs your help...

They're moving into a new space this summer and will no longer be rent free. Come to this fundraiser and the money raised from the door, tips, merch sales, raffles and your general generosity will benefit this valuable service to the uninsured who need medical care. It' not only homeless of unemployed who go to CVFC, there are plenty of folks like myself who can't afford general health care. In my case, the Free Clinic has diagnosed the necrosis of my hip and set me up with an orthopedic doctor at Mayo who has given me a highly effective plan for healing my condition without need of a hip replacement. Additionally, they provide me with the meds I need monthly for my existing conditions, at no cost to me. It would otherwise cost me hundreds of dollars a month without insurance or I'd pay as much or more for insurance that wouldn't cover everything. The clinic has become an extremely important service to Eau Claire residents and often has lines out the door. They're wonderfully giving people, all volunteers, and can only continue with your help.

I'll be playing a short set to start the night, with two acts following me.

Phil Circle's White Christmas Show - 10pm til 1am
208 S. Barstow St.
Eau Claire, WI 54701
USA
715-832-0150
Price: No Cover!!

It's time for my last show of the winter... well until the ones in Florida come January.
It's Phil Circle's White Christmas show!
Along with a full line up of great local musicians like Olaf Lind of Evergreen Grass Band and Lucas and the Coolhand Saints on fiddle, I'll have Frankie from JFT Party band on electric guitar, and mi familia, Megan Corse-Circle on voice and percussion and "Pops" Corse on keys.
We'll even do a short set of music from the classic Irving Berlin movie "White Christmas".
Of course (Corse?) we'll knock out you and a long list of original material (including "Living in the Chippewa Valley") and cover tunes through the decades... the ones prior to this one.
Since "White Christmas" is based on two Army Vets who create a musical sensation and then give the greatest gift (of appreciation and musc) to their old General, any Vets who show will be given a FREE CD in appreciation for their contribution to our country. Honestly, I can't even imagine the sacrifice, even with family and friends who've served... hell, I just play guitar and sing. Thank you.
Please join us for a celebration of the season that lends itself to the possible name Kwanzahnukamasolstice... pronounce it right at the show and get a free cd as well, just for laughs.

Songwriter's Workshop and Forum - 2-5pm
1620 Ohm Ave.
Eau Claire, WI 54701
USA
715-514-0475
Price: $$10 advance registration/$5 for

Here's an opportunity to not only learn from an accomplished songwriter with nothing but good reviews to his credit, but to also interact with other beginning, aspiring & accomplished songwriters as part of a forum.

If you've never written a song before, join us and hear from professionals on ideas to begin the process.

If you've written songs and are looking to expand your repertoire or are running into roadblocks, allow myself and others in attendance to share our ideas. Or simply bring your music for polite input from others you can trust to tell you where your craft is going.

From my more than twenty years as a critically acclaimed songwriter, one thing I've come to understand is that each of us has our own creative voice, no two of us interpret the human condition in the same way. As fellow artists, however, we can all certainly benefit each other with input as to how we've achieved our art. I've been asked to "teach" songwriting and inevitably refuse. While the skills required for playing and understanding music can with question, be taught, I find it dubious when anyone assumes they can teach a specific "formula" for songwriting. I do, however, find that the experience of one one creative person can be shared in a productive way with another aspiring artist. It's through this latter approach that I've found a successful approach to coaching people into and through the process of songwriting. It's a mindset and the skills are something you find in this process. Every songwriter I've ever spoken to has affirmed that it changes constantly, but that there are things to keep in mind throughout.

The Flabby Hoffman Show - 7pm-close
3420 W. Grace
Chicago, IL 60618
USA
773-478-4408
Price: $10

The Flabby Hoffman Show is filming and I'm one of the acts!

Dis guy is da shit...

yup, just typed that.

Flabby brings a fabulous combination of political and irreverent humor to the stage as he and Sloop Biederman host a long list of musical acts interspersed with games of no purpose where you win useless trinkets and the opportunity to brag over nothing and be on T.V.

It's a helluve lotta fun. This must be my 5th or 6th show with Flabby Hoffman, to say nothing of the number of shows I simply attended. Join us and warm this potentially cold January night at one of the most famous Irish Pubs in America, in the big room baby!

You can pick up advance tickets by going online to The Abbey's website.

Pretty cool place and really great people.

Back in July, I played my farewell to Chicago here with an all night show.

It was a great time with lots of old and new friends.

Now, I'm coming back for the holiday and have another show here.

I'm playing a solo set (maybe duo) and enjoying a few of their 300+ varieties of beer.

This used to be a regular haunt of mine, since I lived down the street, so I look forward to being back in the neighborhood and seeing some of the other regulars and making some new friends.

Peace in this and all seasons.

Of course, I'll be doing a set and some other local blues cats will come sit in with us.

This is a rare night, please come join us. The guys will be staying at my house for the weekend, so who knows... there may be more jams.

I haven't been to Charleston since I was a kid. My parents were in a church while I walked down the street in The Ashley, a neighborhood. I heard a radio announce from an open car window that Reagan had been shot. Hopefully this time around, nobody makes any attempts on any lives while I'm there.

I'm looking forward to seeing this beautiful town once again.

Tips are always appreciated.

Little Set Two in The Big Easy for Phil Circle - 10pm
1100 Constance
New Orleans, LA 70130
504-525-5515
Price: Donations

The second time I was in New Orleans was for a culture festival in 1988 and we barely got to see the town beyond constant rehearsals and the big show to 6000 people. We all road straight down in several buses, went right to work, performed, went to the site of the Battle of New Orleans (don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes), had lunch on the riverboat Natchez, jumped on the buses and road home. "Look," as we drove by, "it's Bourbon Street!"

My third time though was on a recent tour when I had no time to stop.

This visit, while I'm playing these two short sets in one evening, we'll be stopping and looking around for a bit. Megan has never been here and I feel my musical roots come from here.

You in town? Know someone who is? Drop in!

Not in town? Would you still like to support my tour?

Make a donation of $1 or more, please.

Thanks very much!

A Short Big Easy Set With Phil Circle - 9pm
8140 Willow St
New Orleans, LA 70112
(504)865-9190
Price: Donations

I'm doing a short set here in N'Orleens before heading to the next venue for a second.

I first visited New Orleans with my parents and five older siblings the week I turned 7.

I remember walking down the street with my parents and they'd keep losing me. Where's Phillip? They'd turn around and find me with my hands hanging through the chain links by Preservation Hall watching the jazz band or staring in through the open doors of a club wondering why the women were wearing nothing but tape. And my Ma wonders why I never followed her into classical music.

I'm always deeply appreciative (and relieved, since money is needed) when folks donate.

So, if you're unable to make a show, but feel like throwing $1 or more my way, thanks!

I've done this once before at this venue and patrons and bar staff alike said it was one of the best nights they've ever had for quality of sound and quality of entertainment!

They've been there 25 years.

It doesn't hurt I bring in George Belle to run sound.

It also doesn't hurt I bring in top local songwriters.

This time we'll have myself and three other acts...

Kate and Eric from Paper Thick Walls, a great progressive new acoustic group with an edge...

Whiskey Bob Taylor, one of the best pre-war style steel guitar blues players around...

and Ian Leith, a gifted writer and performer who transplanted from L.A.

Ok, so Phil's actual birthday is April 12th, but that's a Monday. "I told them to go straight to Tuesday this year!" he said, but "they" didn't listen. So's anyways, this is the annual party and performance. Phil is celebrating his 15th (anniversary of turning 29), and if this one turns out to be anything like the past show-bashes, in addition to a long night of great music, you may see Phil on or under a table by closing time. Remember, what happens to Phil, stays with with Phil, but we can still talk about it in the years to come.

Phil and his good friends Ted Wulfers and Patrick Gemkow will take the stage for sets of their own, and more than likely will end the night (around 3am) all jamming on the stage. There's a REAL good chance that several other established local acts like deez guyz will drop in and play. Drinks are always cheap and the crowd is a wild bunch of hippies and hipsters. Kenny the owner might bend your ear about his favorite 50's jazz artists if ya ask. If you haven't heard Ted or Patrick, look them up online. Ted Wulfers and Patrick Gemkow.
